☼ Ethernet - 144 Pulsations Of Light

Tim Gray, the California ambient musician who records under the name Ethernet, wants to heal you... literally. In a press release accompanying “144 Pulsations Of Light” explains Gray's intent behind the record was to 'apply trance-inducing sonic effects to drone-ambient music... to produce an introspective sonic environment conducive to self-healing work and voyaging into new states of awareness.' That's a pretty ambitious claim to make about one's own music, and whether or not you buy into Gray's ideas about the medicinal qualities of his album, there's no doubt that Ethernet sits nicely alongside the meditative sounds of artists such as Gas, Boards of Canada, and Stars of the Lid.
Rather than expanding upon one type of drone or ambient, Gray looks to synthesize a few of the more pleasant strains of both genres -- working in particular towards blending Wolfgang Voigt's muted propulsion with the airier groans of avant-pop groups like Talk Talk. “144 Pulsations Of Light” aims for an ambient techno/light drone fusion. Swirling distorted synths through trance-like depth-charge bass pulses is what Ethernet has to offer.

☼ Machinefabriek - Weleer

Machinefabriek's music combines elements of ambient, modern classical, drone, noise and field recordings, to create 'films without image.' Influences include Fennesz, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and especially Oren Ambarchi.
The word “Weleer” is Dutch for 'at a previous time' (at least it is according to a very helpful online dictionary) and this gigantic double disc set is exactly that. For those who aren't in the know, Rutger Zutdervelt is the prolific producer who came to light in ‘06 with the release of the frankly awesome “Marijn” album (also on Lampse), and before long we twigged that he wasn't a one-album kinda guy. Far from it! He was writing practically an album a month! Across over 50 releases, which he has released over the last five years, he has amassed hour upon hour of music, and what's more, he's managed to keep a consistent level of quality which makes us all wonder how the hell he does it!? But let's be honest now, with that many super-limited releases there's very little chance that any of us are going to be able to collect all of them, so Lampse, in their infinite kindness, have painstakingly put together this informed retrospective of the man's work... a sort of potted history of the very best of Machinefabriek. Where “Marijn” was almost a continuous work from beginning to end, realized very carefully and constructed in a very short time, “Weleer” takes tracks spanning right across two years of production, and while for most artists that might not be a long time, for Zuydervelt it might as well be four decades. What amazes me about this collection is how perfectly constructed it is, it moves haphazardly between styles and forms, but it feels like these tracks were always supposed to fit together in this sequence, and rather than appearing like there are missing segments it feels like you are gaining an understanding of Zuyderwelt's work by listening to the music in this way. The scope is obviously a great deal wider than “Marijn”; here we see the work of Machinefabriek on a truly wide playing field - he experiments with blissful ambience, field recording, grinding Merzbow-esque analogue noise, gorgeous guitar drone and simple, playful melodic motifs - yet at no point does it ever feel like he is out of his depth. This is one of those rare albums where you can truly hear the hand of a master at work, and while we are still basically at the beginning of a young producer's career, “Weleer” stands as proof that he is almost guaranteed a place in experimental/electronic music history. The knowledge he has of 'where things go', his sense of timing and placement just astounds me. Nothing seems misplaced and nothing seems overdone or underdone, for that matter. Each track bubbles, and effervesces beauty, tension and life. Simply put, “Weleer” is both an incredible starting point for those of you as yet unfamiliar with the work of Machinefabriek, and an indispensable collection for signed-up fans. There's just so much to sink your teeth into here, it is almost impossible to go into any more detail. Highly Recommended!

☼ Aun - VII

Aun is Martin Dumais, one of the figureheads of the Montréal burgeoning experimental electronic scene. Aun's bi-polar output generally shifts between dreamy lulling harmonic distortion, to sheer gut wrenching ultra down-tuned avant black dirge. The aspects that make Aun's music compelling, oddly familiar, and yet ultimately idiosyncratic are the many overlapping rings that make up its Venn diagram: there is his love of noisy guitar (Swans, Sonic Youth) and cold minimalist keyboards (Kraftwerk, Suicide); you can hear baroque elements of classical music, especially when Dumais’ violin is drawn into the mix; more slippery is the provenance of his ambient leanings, which at times resemble early to mid ‘90s isolationist works by Justin Broadrick or Akira Rabelais, or more contemporary analogues from Eluvium or Tim Hecker. When quizzed on his less obvious influences, Dumais volunteers “Troum's constant musical integrity, […] Stars of the Lid make some of the most beautiful music at the moment. Robin Guthrie, Jon Hassel and listening to my old Mike Oldfield and ‘70s period ECM records albums, recently.”
On Aun's “VII” release, the previously mentioned 'gut wrenching ultra down-tuned avant black dirge' is the chosen output. Of strong melodic and compositional sense, impossibly detuned guitars and electric power surges soar through deep space and into black holes. While demented acid fueled fiddlers torments the high ends, ghostly cow-boy melodies and industrial strength psychedelia are time kept by Away, of prog-speed legends: Voïvod! Playing (tracks 2,3,4) an uncharacteristic strain of jazzy, motorik and tribal rhythms, Away traps the surreal electrocution state of “VII” which is complemented by a mystical and symbolic heavy Justin Bartlett adornment. Fantastic! (whew! what a mouthful;)

☼ Ex Mirror - Trans-Species Action

Actually, the name used to be Exterior Mirror. It was shortened for no meaningful reason other than just being tired of writing the whole thing out all the time. Ex Mirror is 100% Claude Willey from Chicago, but others have contribute from time to time. Dr. Dan Nichols is responsible for the building of insect recording devices, rotating microphones, transmitters used in live performance and other electronic gadgets. Other instruments and gizmos used on “Trans-Species Action” were: toy flutes, harmonicas, various electronic gadgets, synthesizers (Roland Juno 6, Prophet 600) samplers (Akai S950, Akai S612, various pedal samplers) Digitech and Boss digital delays, Lexicon Vortex, ART Multiverb 3, various distortion units, analogue tape, digital tape, contact microphones, large chunks of wood, Space Phones, glasses, metal wire, and U.S. currency.
Most of the sounds used on “Trans-Species Action” where derived from insect recordings and automotive traffic pattern field recordings from Illinois and Delaware, which were researched by Willey. The project was all about creating a dialogue with locusts, crickets, and katydids. He was trying to create a language using human patterns (i.e. the car) and train pulses created by the male insect. Willey studied the use of ultrsonic sounds created by the ant and the cabbage moth as well. (jeez! ;)

☼ Yrsel - Requiem For The 3 Kharites

Yrsel is a collaboration between Julien Louvet (The Austrasian Goat)
and CJ Larsgarden (Ondo, A Perfect Friend). Though hailing from different musical genres and from France and Sweden respectively, the two artists bonded following a split release on Burning Emptiness.
Yrsel create complex, multi-layered and atmospheric music that fully explodes the genres of drone, doom and electronica resulting in a glacial melt of sound and texture.

☼ Jason Crumer - A Personal Hell

On this combination 7''/CDr, Crumer continues to demonstrate why he’s so highly regarded in the noise scene. The 7'' channels the best elements of the junk metal and maxed out overdrive pedal style, while the CDr takes a slow, droning direction to nicely contrast the cut up harsh stuff.
